Huge queues of shoppers 'round the block' as IKEA reopens in Northern Ireland

Huge queues of shoppers greeted the return of IKEA's Belfast store as it reopened today.

The retailer is rolling out a trial at the Northern Irish store before opening back up in other locations.

The full scale of the queue shows hundreds of shoppers queueing "round the block" for a chance to enter the store.

Due to restrictions set out by the government, there will be strict policies in place to keep customers and staff safe, Belfast Live reports.

New rules include 'social distancing wardens' at each location, to help shoppers navigate their way through a new one-way system.

Hand sanitisers will also be stationed throughout the store, as well new protective screens at key points such as checkouts.

The store also say they will only be accepting cashless payments to reduce the amount of contact between customers and co-workers.

If possible Ikea is asking customers to bring their own bags and to come prepared with ready to go shopping lists.

The store is also asking that if you can, please shop alone.

Shoppers are asked to only bring one other person from the same household if you need special assistance or if you need to bring your children with you.

Meanwhile IKEA's stores in the Republic will have to continue their wait to open

The retailer had planned to open in phase 1 until the Government and NPHET made a late decision to remove homeware stores from the first stage of reopening.

So Irish stores will not open until the next phase on June 8 at the earliest as a result of the Government guidance.
