Queues in Asda as early risers shop for supplies amid coronavirus pandemic

Hundreds of people descended on Asda in West Bridgford to shop for supplies on the day the Government looks set to publish its emergency Coronavirus Bill.

The pictures, taken by PA photographer Matthew Lawson early on Thursday, March 19, show queues of shoppers waiting to pay at the supermarket in Loughborough Road.

Boris Johson’s emergency bill, which will be published today, will detail the extent of measures to slow the spread of the COVID-19 virus, including extra powers for the police.

The queues in Asda come just days after supermarket shelves were left bare due to stockpiling and panic buying, leading to numerous retailers limiting purchases or opening the stores exclusively for the most vulnerable in society.

So far in Nottingham and Nottinghamshire, 42 people have tested positive for the virus, while two have died.

Across the UK, the number of confirmed cases has risen to more than 2,600 and the death toll has surpassed 100.
