Huge queues form outside Lanarkshire vaccination centre

Over 250,000 people across Lanarkshire have received their first jab since the start of the COVID-19 vaccination programme.

And the signs were certainly encouraging in East Kilbride on Monday, as huge queues formed outside the Ally McCoist Complex.

The Quarry Road facility is being used as a major vaccination hub for the region.

And staff said that Monday had been the busiest day so far.

One worker told us: “The queues were forming outside from first thing this morning.

“This has been the busiest they’ve been yet as things are really ramping up. It was packed, the car park was full and – where the drivers were physically fit to do so – cars were being diverted to nearby Scholars Gate to park.

“People were in a really good mood as they were queuing at lunchtime, with a few people coming out and getting cheered by the others as they waved their hands in the air.”

In addition to the huge number of first vaccinations, more than 17,000 people have received their second dose.

The good news comes as the country gets set to mark a year to the day of the first national lockdown on Tuesday.

One passer by at the centre on Monday saud: “It was hugely busy today – the busiest I’ve seen it yet since the vaccination programme started.”
