Huge police response to reports of 'suspicious activity' in Bristol

Officers in at least eight police cars descended on part of Bristol this evening to reports of suspicious activity at a building site.

The police response came at around 6.30pm when local residents living next to the old Romney House and Lockleaze School site reported what police said was described as 'suspicious activity'.

Patrols in the area rushed to the scene, in between Lockleaze and Cheswick Village, but a police spokesperson said it was found to be young people who had got into the site.

The old Romney House was formerly a council headquarters, where the council's Central Support Services were based.

But the building has been empty for several years, as has Lockleaze School next door, and is in the process of being demolished and redeveloped into 268 new homes, built by the city council's new housing development company.

But work has stopped due to the coronavirus lockdown, and the site has become attractive to local youths.

A police spokesperson said the people who had got into the site were believed to be youths, and had all left before police arrived.
