Huge police presence in Liverpool city centre sparked by pavement hit-and run

Four men were arrested after a police chase sparked by a car mounting a Liverpool city centre pavement and ploughing into two people.

Officers pursued a white Audi before halting it on George's Dock Gates - by the Liver Building - moments after it was reportedly driven away from the scene of the crash.

The incident led to a significant police presence on Victoria Street - where the man and woman had been hit.

Neither were seriously injured.

Emergency services were called to Victoria Street just after 1am on Sunday following reports an Audi had struck two people who had been standing on the pavement.

Three killers and a drugs gang among those locked up this week

The pair, a woman in her 30s and a man in his 20s, were treated by paramedics before being taken to hospital with minor injuries.

The vehicle involved was driven from the scene but an Audi was later stopped after a police chase on The Strand ended at George's Dock Gates.

Those arrested were:

  • A 28-year-old man from Garston on suspicion of Section 18 wounding
  • A 20-year-old man from Speke on suspicion of aggravated vehicle taking, and injury caused by accident
  • A 24-year-old man from Speke on suspicion of aggravated vehicle taking
  • A 28-year-old man from Halewood on suspicion of robbery

* Anyone who witnessed the crash, or who has any information that could assist the police investigation, is asked to message Merseyside Police on Twitter (@MerPolCC), call 101 or contact Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111
