Huge plumes of smoke and large flames as fire grips building containing 'large amount of rubbish'

Fire services have tackled a fire after flames and smoke could be seen billowing across part of North Tyneside.

Crews with Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service were called to reports of a fire in Wideopen at 4.13pm on Sunday.

The brigade dispatched two fire appliances to the area behind West View, on Great North Road, where a derelict building was found to be alight.

It is believed the building contained a large amount of rubbish at the time of the fire.

Onlookers watched from the road as smoke and flames engulfed the building.

A spokesman for Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service said: "We received a report of a fire at derelict building in Wideopen.

"Two fire appliances attended and the incident was complete at 5.07pm."
