Huge new tanning salon planned for Devon retail park

An Exeter retail park could soon have one of its units filled by a solarium.

The salon plans have been put forward for consideration by popular tanning company Consol.

The solarium, which would have around 15 sun beds, would sit between Salon Services and Snap Fitness at Alphington Park in Marsh Barton.

The retail park is also home to Nandos, Chiquito and Frankie and Benny's, Devon Live reported.

The planning statement submitted to Exeter City Council said that the location is "adjacent to an existing gym and beauty services retail unit, as well as the surrounding restaurants" and as such "the proposal is considered appropriate and complimentary to the surrounding uses."

A drawing included in the planning documents shows the rows of booths throughout the unit, joined only by a staff room and a service cupboard.

Cancer Research UK have reported that an estimated 86 per cent of melanomas - around 11,500 cases every year - are linked to sunbed use and exposure to too much sunlight.

Exeter already has two branches of Consol, one on Sidwell Street and one on Cowick Street.
