Huge military planes flying over Edinburgh and Lothians 'nothing to worry about' say RAF

The RAF has reassured the public that the huge Atlas military aircraft flying over Edinburgh and the Lothians today are 'nothing to worry about'.

Taking to Twitter, RAF Brize Norton said:

"This afternoon, our A400M Atlas aircraft will be operating in the vicinity of Edinburgh, whilst engaged in essential training.

"These are necessary, routine, flights and not connected with RAF support to the UK's fight against coronavirus."

Many people had previously taken to social media to either share photographs of the low flying planes, or share their concerns as to why they were circling above the area.

One alarmed woman took to Twitter to say:

"WTF, in the space of 10mins four huge army planes have just flew over my house. #Livingston. Anyone know whats happening?"

The army plane sightings followed another originally unexplained incident where an unmarked aircraft appeared to circle Edinburgh and return to the capital shortly after departing the city's airport on Monday evening.

A West Atlantic flight left the capital shortly after 11pm on 27 April and briefly headed south towards the Pentlands before returning within half an hour.

It turned out to be a mail plane which experienced a mid-air technical failure and was forced back to Edinburgh.
