Huge meteor turns night sky electric blue before crashing to ground

An enormous meteor has been caught on camera streaking across the United States.

The rare sighting was caught on the doorbell cameras of 120 homes and dash cameras from at least two counties on Monday just before 11pm, according to CBS News .

The meteor came crashing down like a fireball as witnesses reported seeing a falling object before hearing a 'boom' sound.

The American Meteor Society said it has received over 120 reports of the meteor and has registered the sightings in Missouri, Illinois, Kansas, Minnesota, Nevada, Nebraska, Oklahoma and Wisconsin.

A driver in Kansas caught the meteor on his dash cam as it travelled past the Cheesecake Factory tower.

Homeowners in St Louis described the flashing light as 'brighter than the full moon'.

Based on the videos, they said the streaking fireball was travelling from east to west and ended somewhere near Wellsville in Missouri.

NASA analysed the data from an EarthCam camera in St Louis and and a camera near Albany, thus calculated the meteor's orbit and brightness.

Homeowners in St Louis described the flashing light as 'brighter than full moon'.

Based on the videos, they said the streaking fireball was travelling from east to west and ended somewhere near Wellsville in Missouri.

They said the phenomenon was caused by a fragment of an asteroid about a basketball size (16in in diameter) and weighing over 200lbs.

They added: "Based on the information currently available, it is possible that this event produced meteorites north of Bridgepoint/McKittrick."
