Huge mass of 'stinking' rubbish found dumped off Nottinghamshire road

Residents have been left disgusted after a huge mass of rubbish was dumped off a bypass in rural Nottinghamshire.

The 'stinking' pile of waste was left in a car park off Oxton Bypass and residents living in an around nearby Calverton discovered it during their regular walks.

It was spotted on Saturday, October 24.

Alex Cox, who lives in Calverton, said: "I think it's disgusting.

"Fly-tipping, especially on this scale, has a hugely detrimental impact on the environment.

"I'm hoping it is cleared as soon as possible and steps are taken to prevent this happening again."

Another resident added: "Just come up the Oxton Bypass to walk the dogs and this is what has been dumped in the car park.

"It looks like refuse because it is all crushed up and stinks."

Repeat and large-scale fly-tipping offenders can be prosecuted for up to £50,000 through the courts, but only in the most severe cases.

Back in April, one of the largest incidents of fly-tipping in Ashfield were reported close to Brierley Forest Park in Huthwaite.

Ashfield District Council had to work with the Environment Agency to clear up and investigate the offence due to its size.

Councillor Boyd Elliott, Conservative councillor for the Calverton ward, said: "Fly tipping is removed at a considerable cost to local councils and can be reported directly.

"Gedling and Newark & Sherwood both have dedicated teams which is a sad sign of the times.

"I would advise anyone that is approached by waste removal operatives to request to have sight of their license. Licensed waste removal companies will accept BACS payments."
