Huge jump in sexual misconduct complaints made to Dublin Bus

There has been a substantial jump in the number of sexual misconduct complaints made to Dublin Bus in the last year.

Dublin Live previously reported on one incident where a man "pleasured himself" in front of a "terrified" young woman on the upper deck of a Dublin Bus. They were only people on the upper deck and the woman got away after she ran off at the next stop.

The figures, which were obtained by Dublin Live, show there were 39 sexual misconduct complaints over the last five years. The number of complaints have been on the rise since 2018 - when there were three.

The figures increased to seven in 2021 before it more than doubled to 17 in 2022. Sorcha, who was subject to a man "pleasuring himself" on a Dublin Bus service, received direct messages from 30 women saying the same thing happened to them on public transport.

The 25-year-old social worker reported the incident to Dublin Bus but has not received any response beyond them telling her an investigation had been launched into the incident which occurred in November last year. The perceived lack of action by Dublin Bus left Sorcha frustrated.

She told Dublin Live: "[It's] disgraceful that Dublin bus have done absolutely nothing to act on this. What will it take for them to react to this?

"At this rate they are facilitating sexual misconduct." Sorcha has been left traumatised by the incident and no longer uses Dublin Bus to get around the city.

Dublin Live has contacted Dublin Bus for a comment.

Dublin Live previously revealed Dublin Bus drivers were assaulted 429 times over the last five years.
