Huge jellyfish washed up on Pembrokeshire beach

Huge jellyfish have been found up on a Pembrokeshire beach.

The barrel jellyfish were found on Barafundle Bay beach on the first day of the half term holidays on Monday.

The jellyfish, which can reach the size of a dustbin, have a sting which is mainly harmless to humans but can still cause some discomfort.

Those who find them are advised to leave the creatures well alone as they can still sting after they appear dead.

Due to their abundance in the North Sea, considered a hotspot for jellyfish sightings, barrel jellyfish remain are one of the more common species found in Welsh waters.

The sighting follow after potentially deadly Portuguese Man O' War jellyfish were spotted on a number of Welsh beaches , including Three Cliffs Bay, Manorbier, West Angle Bay and Broad Haven South earlier this month.

And this was the incredible scene off the Gower Peninsula after aerial footage captured jellyfish floating as far as the eye can see.

A spokeswoman for the Marine Conservation Society said: "The best plan is to leave jellyfish well alone. They can sting (in the case of the barrel this is extremely mild, hardly noticeable really), even when apparently dead, and it's safer not to touch them with bare skin to be on the safe side.

"Like stings from other creatures such as wasps and bees you can't always be certain how any particular individual might react to a sting. What is hardly felt to one person could be quite a different reaction in another."

Those that spot jellyfish are asked to report sightings to the Marine Conservation Society on their website or email any pictures to info@mcsuk.org .
