'Huge improvement' - Newcastle United fans take positives despite Liverpool defeat

Newcastle United fans believe there are positives to take from an improved display despite suffering defeat at Liverpool.

The Magpies took a shock lead at Anfield on Thursday night through an early Jonjo Shelvey long-range strike, but ultimately succumbed to a 3-1 loss.

Goals from Diogo Jota, Mo Salah and an empathic late effort from Trent Alexander-Arnold secured the points, although Newcastle were left aggrieved following a number of contentious refereeing decisions.

Jota's equaliser was allowed to stand despite Isaac Hayden requiring treatment for a head injury on his six-yard box, while Eddie Howe was left frustrated by the decision not to award the visitors a penalty for Alexander-Arnold's challenge on Ryan Fraser.

It was a second straight defeat for the Magpies with festive fixtures against Manchester City and Manchester United to come, but it was an improved showing after the humbling weekend defeat at Leicester City.

Here is how Newcastle fans reacted to the team's showing in the Anfield loss:

'Huge gulf in ability'

'Huge improvement'

'No messing about'

'Not a bad performance'

'That's all we want'

'That's the issue'

'Unlucky'
