Huge icicles on the Central Motorway as temperature in Newcastle drop to -8C

Perilously dangling over unsuspecting drivers, these icicles formed above Newcastle's Central Motorway after temperatures in the city plunged to -8C.

Freezing conditions have hammered the North East in recent days, with snow and ice arriving on the back of Storm Darcy.

And on Thursday night, temperatures continued to plummet with yellow weather warnings in place threatening to cause "disruption" on the region's roads.

And as our pictures show, icicles had formed in the cold on the Central Motorway's upper deck.

One driver who contacted ChronicleLive said: "Some of them were at least a foot long."

On Wednesday, police assisted council staff in removing the icicles that had formed over the road, but they were back again on Thursday.

The weather is forecast to warm up - albeit slightly- in the coming days.

On Friday, the temperature is forecast to creep just above freezing in the afternoon, before falling again at night.

And while the sun is expected to shine on Saturday, the BBC reports that temperatures will hit a maximum temperature of just -1C.

And a weather warning will be in place on both days, between noon on Friday and noon on Saturday, and covers the eastern side of the region.

"Further snow showers, most frequent on Friday night across Angus and Aberdeenshire, becoming fewer and lighter on Saturday morning," it states.

"Fresh accumulations of 1 to 3cm are expected, but locally 5 to 10cm over higher ground of northeast Scotland.

"In addition, icy stretches will form as any partially melted snow refreezes, especially at lower levels."

The conditions have not, however, kept fun-seekers indoors.

Many have flocked to sledging hotspots, despite the current lockdown restrictions, while one thrill-seeking teenager went husky sledding earlier this week - on the quayside.
