Huge Hollywood-style sign erected in Wrexham - but no one is sure how it got there

A huge Hollywood-style sign has been erected on an old coal slag heap in Wrexham.

But no one is quite sure who is behind it or how it got there.

The prominent white lettering spelling out the name of the North Wales town lies at Bersham Bank colliery tip, near Rhostyllen.

It appeared on Sunday, and it's already become the talk of the town, with motorists stopping by along the A483 to take photographs.

Speculative residents have linked the statement sign to Wrexham AFC after actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney took over the club in recent months - bringing a bit of LA glamour to the area.

They're set to create a documentary series - Welcome to Wrexham - with American channel FX.

Council worker Joe Edwards told the BBC that workmen were finishing up when he visited the site at the weekend.

But the 22-year-old said they didn't say who they were or what company they were from, adding: "They weren't anything to do with the council either."

Wrexham AFC addressed the rumours, simply responding: "Wrexham, it’s always been the Hollywood of Europe, apparently…".

It has hit a nerve with some local football fans though, with many commenting that it was an 'embarrassment.'

One Twitter-user shared: "Really who even thought that was a good idea. This is what happens when a Hollywood actor buys a club. I knew they was making the city more of a joke than it already is. Embarrassing to club and city".

Others are impressed though, with many commenting "brilliant", "wow" and "well played" on social media.

Wrexham Council told the M.E.N 'the sign has nothing to do with the council'.
