Huge hole causes road closure in Nottinghamshire village

Residents in a Nottinghamshire village have been hit with more disruption after emergency works closed one of its main roads.

Lowdham was one of the county's worst affected areas during widespread floods in February, with some residents cut off after two named storms - Ciara and Dennis.

And now the disruption is continuing across the village, with part of one of its main through roads closing for emergency water works.

The A612 Southwell Road was closed yesterday, March 9, for the works at the Peugeot garage while Severn Trent Water conduct the works.

The water firm was responding to a call from a member of the public about a leak, and started works on March 6.

The road was closed to accommodate the large hole in the ground as a result of the works.

A spokesperson for Severn Trent Water said: "This came from a customer report. A member of the public reported a leak on March 6 and we responded to this.

"From the inspection, we found that we needed to replace a six inch mains pipe, and the road was closed on Monday to accommodate the works.

"The works will be up until today, March 10, when it is due to be completed."

Bus operator NCT has also confirmed some services are being diverted around the village.

In a statement, NCT said: "Pathfinder 26 is diverted due to the emergency closure of the A612 near Peugeot in Lowdham.

"Between Lowdham and Thurgarton, buses to Southwell are diverting via Caythorpe and Hoveringham.

"Buses to Nottingham are having to divert via Oxton and the Epperstone By-Pass due to a sign on the Westgate / Nottingham Road junction preventing buses turning left.

"Stops at Lowdham War Memorial are being served, but not Gonalston or Gonalston Crossroads. NTU Brackenhurst is being served towards Southwell.

"Customers for Nottingham should cross the road and catch buses towards Southwell and stay on the bus for the return journey via Oxton."

"There are delays to the service."
