Huge hammerhead shark circles man enjoying a swim - and he has no idea it's there

A man enjoying a leisurely swim in the ocean had a narrow escape - when a huge shark swam past him just yards away.

Alarming overhead video shows the man enjoying some time to himself in clear waters off a beach in Miami – or so he thinks, as a 10ft long hammerhead shark lurks underneath the surface, circling him.

Jason McIntosh, 41, from Miami, Florida, was flying his drone over the sea last Sunday, November 15, when he captured the amazing scene.

“I was flying the drone just checking out the south beach for taking pictures," Jason said.

“My passion is to shoot wildlife in the ocean.

“I’ve seen hammerheads out there in the shoreline before, but my eyes lit up when I saw the guy floating backwards swimming with the shark starting to circle him.

“I had no way to warn him.”

So oblivious of the shark’s presence, the man being filmed even puts his thumb up to the camera at one point.

Jason said: “The shark was in its ocean.

Hammerhead attacks on humans are rare, fortunately (@jasonmac7/Jam Press)

"You can’t forget it’s their ocean, not ours. We are in their environment when we are in their ocean.

“Everyone has been telling me it’s epic footage.”

Jason shared his video to Instagram, where it has since been inundated with comments from fans who are blown away by the clip.

The video has so far racked up over 100,000 views.

The one-minute video even caught the attention of Mick Fanning, a three-time world surfing champion, who survived a shark attack while competing in Jeffreys Bay, Africa in 2015.

"Holy s***, wow!!," he said.

"So amazing," someone else commented.

Another person added: "Damn. This is awesome!"

The shark eventually swam off and the man was reportedly unharmed.

Most hammerhead species are fairly small and are considered harmless to humans, according to the National Geographic.

But, the great hammerhead's enormous size and fierceness make it potentially dangerous, although few deadly attacks have ever been recorded.
