Huge grass fire captured in dramatic images as 37 acres of Gower common land goes up in flames

Dramatic images have emerged showing firefighters tackling a huge grass fire near Swansea Airport last night, which could be seen from miles around.

Crews from Reynoldston and Swansea West stations battled two blazes one mile apart from each other at Fairwood Common, covering an area of around 37 acres.

The smoke from the blaze travelled towards the West Cross area.

And these pictures and video shot by Edward Cole and Ben Williams reflect how dramatic the blaze was.

The crew used beaters, a high pressure hose and a fogging unit at the scene after arriving at 6.33pm.

The spokesman said a re-inspection of the scene was due to take place today, after fire crews left the scene at 9pm.

Earlier in the day on Monday, a grass fire also took place at Cefn Bryn in Llanrhidian .

It was to a lesser scale, with one hectare of grass alight, and was dealt with by a crew from Reynoldston who used a hose reel jet to douse the flames.

They arrived at 3.20pm and spent just under two hours at the scene.
