Huge fly-tip including bricks, tiles and plastic bags discovered near Calverton

Shocking pictures show bricks, tiles and plastic bags dumped off a road near Calverton.

Village resident Martin Smith, 44, spotted the mess while out jogging around 7pm on Sunday, May 12.

It was left on a track off the corner of Moor Lane, towards the A6097 Epperstone Bypass, on the Calverton and Woodborough border.

The dump included bricks, tiles and plastic bags - and Mr Smith, of Mews Lane, Calverton, said it was difficult to miss as he jogged by.

Speaking of the discovery of the dump, Mr Smith, a customer relations manager at Ikea, in Giltbrook, said: "I was [like] 'oh my God'.

"Some people have no respect. It looks like a builders' dump, not someone domestically doing it.

"There's glass panels in there and bricks. For this amount to be dumped in one go seems to be a one-off.

"But we suffer from fly-tipping in general.

"I would have run past it had it not been such a big amount of rubble. It literally took my breath away."

Mr Smith, a dad-of-two who has lived in the village for six-and-a-half years, described the mess as "unsightly".

He feared the mess could leave a bad impression on people passing through.

"You would think it's a dumping ground and visit somewhere else," he said, adding: "I can't get my head around it to be fair.

"The amount that was there, there was no care or consideration to anyone or anybody.

"They are just selfish people."

Mr Smith reported the dump to Gedling Borough Council.

However, the exact location of the dump falls under the remit of Newark and Sherwood Council.

The borough council has passed on information for the district authority to investigate.

A Gedling Borough Council spokesman said: "We’ve been made aware of a fly tip on the corner of Moor Lane, Woodborough, and our neighbourhood wardens visited the site yesterday (Monday, May 13) to see if there was any evidence.

"The site falls just within the boundaries of Newark and Sherwood District Council so our neighbourhood wardens have passed all of the relevant information to Newark and Sherwood District Council for their officers to continue to investigate."

A Newark and Sherwood District Council spokesman added: "We are currently checking out the land ownership of where this material has been fly-tipped and that will assist us in dealing with the matter further.

"Fly-tipping is an ugly crime and causes a blight to the environment, wherever it occurs."

Anyone who witnesses fly-tipping is asked to report it via the district council's website or by calling 01636 650000.

"Please make a note of any vehicle registrations and any other identifying evidence," the district council spokesman added.
