Huge floods across major bypass after contractors burst pipe

Hundreds of homes in and around Formby continue to be without water after contractors accidentally burst a main water pipe.

Works were being carried out on street lighting around the Formby Bypass, when the pipe was struck, causing a deluge of water across the junction.

A spokesman for United Utilities said “A third-party working on street lighting along the Formby Bypass unfortunately went through and damaged one of our pipes.

“We dispatched teams to the area immediately and have managed to get everyone back on supply within a few hours, due to a combination of moving water around our integrated network to bypass the damaged section of pipe and our water on wheels tankers.

“Engineers remain on site and are working hard to get the pipe repaired.”

Homes affected are mainly in the L37 and PR8 postcodes and residents are reporting either no water at all, or no cold water, though some people say their supply has returned.

One woman told the ECHO : “Our water is back on… but it’s brown.”

In a text sent to residents, United Utilities said: “When water starts flowing again, it can occasionally be a different colour for a couple of reasons.

“You can clear the problem, by running the cold water tap that’s closest to your internal stop tap, just above a trickle.

“This may take anywhere from a few minutes to an hour, why not collect this water and use it to water your plants? If you’re on a meter, don’t worry, that’s less than five pence.

“While your water is discoloured, we advise that you do not run the hot water tap, use dishwashers, washing machines, or any other appliances which uses your hot water supply.”
