Huge flash of light seen over Newport as 2,000 homes are left without power

Thousands of residents were left without power after a huge flash of light was seen briefly over the neighbourhood.

The flash of light, which was caught on camera by one Newport resident, was caused by a fault in overhead electrical equipment.

It was seen briefly lighting up the sky over houses in the area, before the power went out - you can see it in the video, above.

People in the Bettws area of Newport were left with no electricity for between two minutes and up to half an hour on Tuesday, January 28 at around 9.25pm.

Bettws Independents councillor, Kevin Whitehead, experienced the outage and said worried residents had called him.

He said: "I had a two-minute power cut and it came back on - good back-up system, it seems."

Western Power Distribution said that repairs are being carried out on the overhead equipment today.

A Western Power Distribution Spokesman said: "We had a fault with a piece of overhead equipment, which would have resulted in a brief flash of light.

"It was a fault in the equipment and we'll be replacing that today.

"Around 2,000 properties in the Bettws area initially lost power, but the vast majority had power back on within a few minutes and the final 50 properties had their power restored after about half an hour."

The spokesman added: "We will be carrying out repairs later today.

"We would like to say we're sorry for any inconvenience caused."
