Huge flames rip through Sunderland allotments as residents told to keep windows closed

Residents in Sunderland are being urged to keep their windows closed as firefighters tackle a blaze.

Emergency services were called to the scene at an allotment in Fulwell overnight on Sunday and issued a warning to those living nearby.

Water supply in the area around Newcastle Road is also said to be affected.

Pictures taken during the night show huge flames ripping through the allotment.

A spokesperson for Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service tweeted: "Red Watch crews are currently dealing with a large allotment fire in the Fulwell area.

"Please avoid the area and if you are in the surrounding areas please shut windows and doors.

"Red Watch currently have seven fire engines and a Command Support Unit in attendance.

"Crews are still battling to bring the allotment fire in Fulwell under control.

"Please avoid the area wherever possible. Your water supply may be affected if you live locally."
