Huge firms kick off talks to buy Prestwick Airport

A huge European transport firm and a Far Eastern banking corporation are making a bid to buy Prestwick Airport we can reveal.

Talks are kicking off with airport management about the potential buy-out.
It is understood the firm could invest further in the Ayrshire transport hub and create new jobs.

East Ayrshire Councillor Ian Grant who chairs the Glasgow Prestwick Airport Consultative Committee said he introduced the “interested parties to the opportunity.”
He told the local democracy reporting service: “They want to invest and develop it and make it a commercial hub. We are looking at something that has tremendous economic potential. There is the potential for hundreds of new jobs.”

The name of the prospective buyers is not being released.

Conservative Councillor Grant said: “One major European company is leading the bid backed by a multi-billion banking and commercial corporation.

“I have no financial interest in this - I have just pulled everyone together.”

The politician said a “substantial and credible offer” and plan for improvement and investment involving hundreds of new jobs will be presented to the Prestwick Airport management board and subsequently the Scottish Government.”

The international businessman added: “I have no way of telling if the Scottish Government will accept this proposal.

“However, I do sincerely hope and believe that it will be acceptable to them, thus securing the future of our airport and its extensive workforce for many years to come.

"There is so much uncertainty at the moment and the whole country is crying out for some good news."

A previous preferred  bidder dropped out in September transport minister Michael Matheson announced.

The Scottish Government bought the airport for £1 in 2013.
