Huge fire with 'series of explosions' forces terrified residents to flee their homes

A series of explosions has forced people to run in terror following a fire at an industrial site.

Residents in Blackburn, Lancashire, ran for safety after the area was rocked by multiple small explosions last night (Saturday), which were sparked by a nearby blaze.

Footage captured by resident Kristian Buck shows people running amidst the noises of explosions, while one neighbour described feeling their home "shake" with the noise.

Firefighters were called to the scene shortly after 7pm following reports of a fire breaking out at the industrial site in the town where several local businesses including a sofa manufacturers are based.

The fire service said crews were at the scene for nearly two hours dousing the flames, Lancs Live reports.

The scene is close to a development of new houses, but locals have said there has been no impact on nearby properties.

One onlooker said the fire appeared to have started in a lorry parked next to the factory. They said: "[It] started off small then got out of hand."

A spokesperson for Lancashire Fire & Rescue Service said: "At 19:15 on 10 June 2023, four fire engines from Preston, Bamber Bridge, Blackburn and Darwen attended a commercial building fire on Kelly Street, Blackburn.

"Fire crews used two jets and two breathing apparatus and were in attendance for approximately one hour and forty minutes."

The cause of the fire is currently unknown and an investigation is underway.

Footage captured from a nearby entrance shows people watching a thick plume of black smoke before an explosion, causing people to scream and run. One person can be heard yelling, "keep away" as the fire rumbles in the background.
