Huge fire tears through moorland north of Bolton - a barbecue could be to blame

Firefighters are tackling a huge fire tearing through moorland north of Bolton.

It is thought that the blaze, which has been raging since about 6pm last night (Saturday) was started by a barbecue.

Fire crews from Greater Manchester and Lancashire are at the scene off Bolton Road, Darwen.

The fire service is warning people nearby to stay indoors and keep their windows and doors closed as a result of the fire.

Meanwhile, people are being told not to visit Darwen Tower today.

A statement from Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service said: "Eight fire engines along with wildfire teams and specialist appliances resumed firefighting at first light. The fire is affecting approximately 5km of moorland.

"Please avoid the area, particularly trails along the Witton Weaver’s Way. Road closures are in place including Turton Road. Travelling to the scene by vehicle, bike or on foot, may block access for emergency vehicles and hamper our response.

"If you’re nearby and affected by smoke, stay indoors and keep your windows and doors closed."

A spokesperson for Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service said last night: "Firefighters from Darwen were called to reports of a fire in the open near Bolton Road, Darwen.

"On arrival firefighters requested further crews attend.

"Firefighters are currently using aqua packs and beaters to bring the fire under control."

They later added: "There are eight fire engines in attendance alongside a Polaris vehicle, two hagglund vehicles and the burn team.

"The fire front is approximately 1.5km by 44m."
