Huge fire rages on Dartmoor and can be seen for miles as night sky lights up with flames

A massive fire is gripping parts of Dartmoor and can be spotted miles away with the night sky being lit up by flames.

Reports from Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service have confirmed it is near Peter Tavy, a few miles north east of Tavistock.

They have deployed five pumps and other units, but have not managed to access the fire yet due to its remote location.

Numerous people have reported seeing flames in the area.

A spokesperson for Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said: "Our crews are currently at Peter Tavy but we haven't actually accessed the fire yet. We have five pumps and various special appliances."

A witness has described the scene as 'Biblical'.

Matt Gilley told Plymouth Live: "I'm nearing Cadover now, I can't actually see the flames but the hills are like a silhouette from the smoke.

"It's Biblical."

Rob Steemson, Dartmoor national Park emergency officer, told the BBC that he estimates the blaze is around 5km (3.1 miles) wide and continuing to spread.

He added that the fire was being stoked by fierce south-westerly winds.
