Huge fire near M5 destroys 20 vehicles

More than 20 vehicles were completely destroyed during a huge blaze near Taunton.

Flames erupted at a barn, based near to the M5, which contained dozens of car parts and vehicles.

Black smoke could be seen billowing out for miles from the inferno at Poundisford Road, Somerset Live.

Ten fire crews were called to the blaze at around 8pm (June 1), they spent six hours battling flames.

A spokesman for Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service confirmed the barn was made from timber and sheet asbestos. It's understood the latter can release dangerous fibres into the air if burned.

"One fire appliance from Taunton was initially sent to a small fire that was out of control, " said the fire service spokesman.

"On arrival, crews requested a further five appliances as the barn was well alight.

"The second and third from Taunton, Cullompton, two from Wellington, Bridgwater, the water carrier from Bridgwater, the incident command unit from Wiveliscombe and the welfare unit from Crediton were sent."

The spokesman added: "This was a single storey barn measuring 40m by 8m constructed of timber and sheet asbestos containing vehicles.

"Vehicles outside the building were also on fire."

Fire crews at the scene used water jets and compressed air foam to fight the huge blaze, which was eventually brought under control at around 2am.

Firefighters say the blaze caused "100 per cent damage" to the building and its contents.
