Huge fire engulfs 48-storey skyscraper in United Arab Emirates city of Sharjah

A huge blaze broke out at a 48-storey skyscraper in the United Arab Emirates city of Sharjah.

No one was badly hurt in the fire in the Abbco Tower, but seven people were treated for minor injuries, a spokesperson for the city said.

Dramatic footage showed how the building became engulfed in flames as horrified onlookers watched on.

Firefighters have since brought the fire under control.

It took "at least a dozen" fire engines and "dozens" of firefighters to put out the blaze, local journalist Vicky Kapur said.

Emergency workers were called to the scene shortly after 9pm local time (5pm UK time).

Residents were evacuated from the tower, the city official added. The cause of the fire has not been disclosed.

At least five buildings nearby were evacuated as the fire service worked at the scene, according to the Dubai-based Khaleej Times.
