Huge fire causes first ever professional ladies' event at Wentworth to be suspended

Fire caused the first ever professional ladies' event at Wentworth to be suspended on Friday.

The West Course was evacuated after emergency services were called during the final of the Rose Ladies Series.

The fire had started on nearby Chobham Common and was fanned by strong winds after temperatures had soared across the south of England to over 36 degrees celcius.

Emergency services stepped in to try and control the blaze just off the 10th hole as players and caddies evacuated the course.

Felicity Johnson said: "As were playing the ninth, we could see the smoke in the distance but it seemed to get closer pretty quickly.

"It is pretty scary when you suddenly see flames and then hear them. We all know how fast fire can travel so it was pretty scary for a moment there.”

Alice Hewson Hewson leads the 54-hole finale on six under par with Solheim Cup star Charley Hull two shots back, followed by Liz Young and Georgia Hall who are one shot further.

Play will resume at 9.30am on Saturday.

The Rose Ladies series was organised by leading men's golfer Justin Rose and his wife Kate.

They have invested their own money into making the competition a success.
