Huge fire at Scots prison car park as cops launch major probe

Emergency services raced to a Scots prison last night after five cars in the staff car park went up in flames.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service and Police Scotland attended HMP Kilmarnock just after 7pm on Friday.

Fire crews stayed on the scene for two hours as they battled five car blazes in the prison carpark.

Clouds of black smoke could be seen in the area during the fire.

Enquiries into the incident are currently ongoing but a number of locals claimed the cars had been deliberately set alight.

A spokesperson for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said: "We attended HMP Kilmarnock yesterday evening.

"We received a call at 7..19pm and two fire engines attended. We left the scene at 9.14pm."

A Police Scotland spokesperson added: "Officers attended HMP Kilmarnock around 7.25pm on Friday the 23rd of April following reports of five vehicles being on fire within the carpark.

"The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service attended and the fire was put out.

"Enquiries into the incident are ongoing."
