Huge fire at Eastville Tesco after 'loud boom' heard by residents near M32

The M32 remains partially shut following a huge fire and "loud boom" at the Tesco store in Eastville.

The northbound carriageway was closed completely last night (February 23) as fire crews from across Bristol tackled a blaze under the J2 slip road.

A video, taken outside the store at around 11pm, show flames near the side of the Tesco building situated next to the M32.

Several residents also reported hearing an explosion, with one saying: "I live by there and heard a loud boom which I thought was an explosion."

Another said:  "I live close by and heard a loud boom then loads of sirens."

The fire has since been extinguished and the northbound carriageway has reopened aside from the exit slip road at J2.

Highways England said it remains shut due to "fire damage" and further repairs will be carried out throughout the morning, which could cause "severe delays" during rush hour.

Avon Fire and Rescue tweeted last night: "Crews from @AFRSTemple @AFRSSouthmead @AFRSBedminster attending fire under exit slip Road M32 north junction 2. Exit slip now closed."

A fire spokeswoman added this morning (February 24) that the fire took place in an open storage area in the site.
