Huge explosions heard on Kilmarnock estate after van goes up in flames

Police are investigating after a van went up in flames in Kilmarnock.

The incident on Altonhill Avenue last night comes less than 24 hours after a van was torched less than two miles away in Kilmaurs.

One resident who spotted the incident reported seeing the van engulfed by flames shortly before midnight just before loud explosions could be heard.

Nobody was injured in the incident and the flames were extinguished after two fire engines raced to the scene.

One eyewitness told the Kilmarnock Standard: "I went to my bed at the back of 11, and because I'm decorating I've removed a blind.

"I noticed a van out the back with lights on. I then went to my bedroom came back through and it was in flames.

"I don't know what started it or anything I just saw the flames and then heard the explosions and all the neighbours were out by this point worried about their own cars and things.

"Fire engines arrived very quickly and got it all under control, though.

"Thankfully everyone was safe though and that's all that matters."

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman said: “We were alerted at 11.36pm on Thursday, February 13 to reports of a vehicle on fire at Altonhill Avenue, Kilmarnock.

“Operations control mobilised two appliances to the scene, where they were met with a truck well alight.

“Firefighters extinguished the fire and left after making the area safe.”

A Police Scotland spokeswoman confirmed that officers were called to an incident at Altonhill Avenue at 11.40pm. Enquiries are ongoing.
