Huge explosion in Myanmar kills at least 55 with dozens more injured

  • A massive explosion in Kaungtup village, Shan state, Myanmar , has reportedly killed at least 55 people and injured over 70, also damaging approximately 100 homes.
  • The blast occurred on Sunday noon local time at a warehouse owned by the Ta'ang National Liberation Army (TNLA), an ethnic rebel group, which was storing explosives for mining and quarrying operations.
  • The TNLA, currently fighting the military junta, expressed its deepest condolences, stating the "accidental explosion" is under investigation and those responsible will be held accountable, with relief efforts planned for affected families.
  • Eyewitnesses described a huge cloud of smoke and a fireball, with many residents initially fearing an airstrike, reflecting the ongoing conflict in Myanmar since the 2021 military coup.
  • Residents expressed shock and anger, questioning why a facility with such a large quantity of explosives was located so close to residential areas, with one survivor recounting his narrow escape.
