Huge Edinburgh crowd of drunken revellers descend on city as Christmas Market opens

A large group of drunk revellers were seen congregating on Edinburgh’s Royal Mile last night as they looked to keep the party going into the wee hours.

Footage shared on Snapchat appears to show a man conducting a crowd in a rendition of "Oggy Oggy Oggy" on the iconic street.

Several people can be seen with cans in hand and it is estimated that the group of late night party goers could contain anything between 50-100 people.

The man filming the video can be heard chanting “Oggy, Oggy, Oggy, Oi, Oi, Oi” before directing the crowd when shouting “when I say Oggy - you say Oi” and of course the crowd reciprocated the command.

But much has been made of loud noise in the city centre of Edinburgh recently with Edinburgh Live reporting on residents complaining about midnight snackers and drunk punters making a racket in an outdoor seating area at the top of Cockburn Street earlier this week.

In the early hours of the morning on Tuesday November 16, SOS Cockburn Street, an organisation that looks after and maintains the area, took to social media to voice their frustration at drinkers once again keeping residents awake due to loud behaviour.

The police, on this occasion, had shown up to the area but kept driving when they saw nothing, prompting the group of people to return once they left.

Their tweet said: "Finally the police arrive! They slow but don't actually stop. Immediately the lads pack up and leave. What responsibility does the shed owner have to prevent this? It keeps us awake."

As part of the response to antisocial behaviour on Cockburn Street this week, council leader, Adam McVey, said: "We are disappointed to hear about reports of anti-social behaviour and anyone witnessing this should contact the police. We also ask that people are respectful of the communities that live around our busier city centre streets.”
