Huge Dublin Port seizure as Revenue officers find €5m of cigarettes hidden in container

A whopping €5 million worth of cigarettes were discovered by Revenue officials in a massive find at Dublin Port.

The illegal items were smuggled into Dublin in a container that had arrived on a vessel from Rotterdam in The Netherlands.

But officers discovered the 7.2 million cigarettes after scanning the container using a mobile x-ray scanner.

The items represent a potential loss of around €3.9 million to the Exchequer.

A Revenue spokeswoman said: "Investigations are ongoing.

"This seizure is part of Revenue’s ongoing operations targeting the shadow economy and the supply and sale of illegal tobacco products.

"If businesses or members of the public have any information regarding smuggling, they can contact Revenue in confidence on free phone number 1800 295 295."
