Huge crack emerges in middle of Salford street as road 'partially collapses'

A stretch of a Salford street has been closed off after a mysterious huge crack appeared in its surface.

Around 150 metres of Vine Street, which overlooks Kersal Dale, was blocked this afternoon (Tuesday) after the road 'partially collapsed'.

The road runs along the top of a steep, wooded hillside, but according to Salford City Council, properties on are not affected.

An investigation into what caused the cracks is under way.

While the affected area has been sealed-off, one carriageway remains open for emergency services, access and deliveries.

Highways engineers are at the scene while drainage systems in the area are also being checked.

Coun Mike McCusker, Salford City council's executive support member for planning, housing and sustainable development, said: “The team responded quickly to the reports of damage and are working to discover the cause of the problem.

"Our investigations are at an early stage."
