'Huge coup' - Former Nottingham Forest boss surprised Reds managed to sign Lyle Taylor

Former Nottingham Forest manager Alex McLeish has described the Reds’ acquisition of Lyle Taylor as a “huge coup”.

Taylor’s form for Charlton Athletic last season attracted attention from Premier League clubs, Glasgow Rangers and sides across European.

But Forest won the race for his signature, with the striker grabbing his first goal for the club in Friday’s 1-1 draw against Derby County.

Speaking to Football Insider, McLeish said he expected Taylor to end up at a top-flight club in the summer.

“That was a huge coup for Forest,” said McLeish, who had a brief spell in charge at the City Ground during the 2012/13 season.

“I was expecting Taylor to go to possibly a Premier League team but it’s a really good bit of business.

“I actually saw a bit of Charlton last year and in the last couple of years. I’ve got friends at Charlton and we went to quite a lot of the games, so I’ve seen a lot of Taylor and he’s definitely got something really going for himself.

“You can see the confidence, you can see the body language when he walks onto the pitch and he knows he’s a presence.

“The big crux of the matter is that he has to show that in every single game but he looks like a guy with amazing belief in himself.”
