Huge corn maze re-opens in Nottingham complete with axe throwing and archery

There's fun for all ages at Nottingham's amazing maze which is back this summer with a new design and extra attractions.

The 12-acre field of maize covers more than two-and-half miles so visitors can while away the time getting lost and playing games including a scavenger hunt, word search and a crow hunt.

Returning to Lime Lane Woods, Arnold, for a third year the maze has a viewing platform this time so participants can see the maize from a different angle.

Visitors can pay £1 for an escape route map but if they manage to successfully find the exit and return it unopened the money is refunded.

Planted during May the maize is now around 10ft in height so visitors can't see what is round the next corner - it could be giant Jenga or hoopla... or just another path.

Maze director Aaron Cowley said: "It's more about trying to find everything than get out - that is the accomplishment and it seems to work.

"A lot of parents stand up on the viewing platform and yell at the children, go this way, go back that way.

"The average time is around 90 minutes to two hours and the longest we've had in here is five-and-a- half hours. It's a lot of fun.

"You really can make a full day of it. You can bring a picnic and we now have a bar and cafe on site.

Once they've escaped the maze visitors can have a go at archery or axe throwing. Both are an extra £2 for six goes.

Mabel Lindsay-Rowe, three, and her 18-month-old sister Hallie, were visiting with their mum Amy, from Sutton-in-Ashfield.

Amy said:" It's great. It's a lot of fun and an excuse to get out and burn some energy."

After building up a thirst going round the maze, visitors can buy soft drinks, hot drinks, beer, prosecco and snacks at the new cafe bar.

Also new on the site, off the A614, is the woodland cinema, which is showing Harry Potter films this week in the evenings.

Ghost, Shrek, Blair Witch Project and Cabin in the Woods are also on the August programme - the rustle of the trees is sure to add to the chilling atmosphere after-dark.

And it's possibly the only outdoor cinema to have a beer pump in the middle of the woodland.

The maze will remain up until Halloween when it turns into a scare maze.

As tempting as it may be visitors are advised not to eat the corn once it has ripened.

"It's animal grade so very bitter," said Aaron. "At the end it goes to Stoke Bardolph and is turned into renewable energy."
