Huge clouds of black smoke spotted at sea as sailing boat catches fire off Cornwall coast

A boat has caught fire off the Cornish coast with emergency services racing to scene at sea as black smoke poured into sky.

One person was onboard the vessel when it caught fire before they were helped by another passing boat.

The crewman was then handed to members of the RNLI Falmouth team.

A statement from the Coastguard read: "At around 4.45pm today (25th August), HM Coastguard received multiple 999 calls regarding a sailing vessel on fire with one person on board approx. 1.5 miles South-East of Portscatho, Cornwall.

"Portscatho Coastguard Rescue Team, Falmouth RNLI Lifeboats and the Search and Rescue Helicopter from St Athan were sent.

"The single crewman was assisted by a nearby motor cruiser and passed into the care of Falmouth RNLI."

A tweet from BBC Radio Cornwall showed pictures of the boat apparently on fire, and an RNLI lifeboat on the scene.

The tweet at 7pm said: "This is the scene off #Porthscatho this evening as emergency services respond to a boat fire - #Falmouth Coastguards co-ordinating. Hope everyone is ok".
