Huge change in Tesco delivery charges sees MSE advice on avoiding hike

Tesco is making huge changes to the way it charges customers for home delivery - scrapping the variable rate and introducing a flat fee

At the minute customers are charged between £2 and £7 to get their groceries delivered - depending on what time and date they want goods sent and how far in advance they book.

That is being replaced with a flat fee of £4.50 - with a new £1.50 charge for Click and Collect.

At the same time Tesco has said it will offer free home delivery for Clubard Plus customers who pay £7.99 a month.

And those who get their goods delivered from a 'fulfilment centre' will have to pay £5.50 per delivery.

So those who normally book well in advance and go for an off-peak slot will end up paying significantly more.

MoneySavingExpert also revealed that if you order items worth less than £40 for delivery (or less than £25 for Click & Collect), you'll also have to pay a £4 surcharge, reports The Mirror.

Martin Lewis's MoneySavingExpert says to avoid the hike, if you have two deliveries a month from Tesco, then it's an idea to look at their Delivery Saver option.

The Delivery Saver costs £7.99 a month or £47.94 for a six-month block and gives you free delivery and free click & collect, meaning this route is cheaper than paying per shop.

You can use it as much as you like during the month, but only if your order is more than £40.

It also suggests, if possible, moving to Click & Collect for £1.50, or switching back to shopping instore.

However, be aware that price differences on goods could mean you'll pay more than if you bite the bullet for Tesco's new delivery charges - so it's best to shop around to make sure you find the best alternative.

Another suggestion is to consider Deliveroo or UberEats, who now deliver from supermarkets such as Co-op and M&S Food Outlets.

If they operate in your area, your shop could cost as much as £2-£3 to deliver via them.

Clucard Plus will also soon offer free delivery for £7.99 a month - with other veneifits including up to 10 per cent off some shopping.
