Huge cargo ship runs aground and gets trapped in Scots harbour

A massive cargo ship had to be pulled free after getting stuck in a Scots harbour.

The huge vessel ran aground while entering Aberdeen harbour this morning prompting a massive rescue effort.

Laden with lorries, containers and goods, the ship could be seen by shocked punters dipping into the water.

It couldn't move after getting too close to the shore.

The coastguard were called but weren't needed after the harbour's own boats helped the stricken ship.

An Aberdeen Coastguard spokesman said there did not appear to be any pollution from the grounding.

He said: "A vessel ran aground coming into the harbour this morning and we were told about it around 8am.

"The vessel was stuck and the harbour's tugs assisted in freeing it."

"It is now alongside the harbour in deeper water.

"There are no signs of pollution in the harbour."

A new multi-million pound harbour development is taking shape in the city,

Aberdeen Lord Provost Barney Crockett said: "I think this incident shows the advantages there will be for the new harbour with more deep water berths."
