Huge cannabis farm found inside house after smell fills street and tips off police

A huge cannabis farm was found inside a house after a strong smell in the street tipped off police.

Officers on Antonio Street, in Bootle, smelled cannabis while passing a property at around 10am on Monday morning.

They could see plants inside the home and after getting a search warrant, police raided the building and found the farm inside.

Plants were reportedly growing across a number of rooms in the house and the electricity supply used for the equipment was being abstracted.

Nobody was arrested in connection with the find but an investigation is ongoing.

A spokesperson for Merseyside Police said: "Officers on patrol sniffed out a cannabis farm with more than 100 plants in Bootle this morning (Monday 22 June).

"Officers on Antonio Street smelled cannabis coming from a property at around 10am, saw cannabis plants inside and after gaining a search warrant, entered the premises and found the plants growing across a number of rooms

"The electricity supply had also been abstracted."

Sergeant Chris Hughes said said: "Every time we discover a cannabis farm and seize the plants, the streets of Merseyside are made safer.

"The people who set up these farms do not care about the dangers they pose to neighbouring properties, or the harm drugs cause to vulnerable members of our communities.

“They often use violence and intimidation to keep their illicit businesses going, and the fact this farm has been found means these plants will not now be used to line the pockets of criminals who bring only misery to our streets.

"Keep reporting any suspicious behaviour, smells, sights or visitors in your area and we will take action like this

If you have any information about suspected drug production in your area, please contact @MerPolCC, 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Some of the signs that cannabis is being grown are:

• Strange smells and sounds
• Frequent and varied visitors to a property, often at unusual times
• Gardening equipment being taken into a property, such as plant pots, fertiliser, fans and industrial lighting
• Windows are sealed and covered or the curtains are permanently closed
• Heat from an adjoining property
• Birds gathering on a roof in cold weather
• Individually these activities may seem commonplace, however, together may indicate something more sinister
