Huge canal search for man who entered the water 'but didn't resurface'

A huge canal search is being carried out after a man entered the water but didn't resurface.

Emergency services were called to Lightbody Street, in Vauxhall, shortly before 3pm to reports a man had been seen in Stanley Dock.

Police, fire crews and paramedics are all at the scene, and have cordoned off the area, whilst specialist under water search teams look for the man.

Members of the public are being asked to avoid the area while people are being turned away from the scene by police officers.

A spokesperson for Merseyside Police said: "Emergency Services are currently in attendance of Lightbody Street, Liverpool following reports of a concern for safety of a man in the area.

"Officers attended at around 2:50pm after a man had reportedly entered the canal, but had not resurfaced.

"Specialist under water search teams are at the location and assisting Merseyside Police, Merseyside Fire and Rescue and Northwest Ambulance Service.

"The public are urged to avoid the area whilst we deal with the incident.

"Further details will be available when we have them."

Pictures taken at the scene showed at least six ambulances, multiple police cars and vans and a number of fire engines at the scene.

An air ambulance also landed on nearby Derby Park for easy access to the scene if it is needed.
