Huge boost for Sinn Fein as party tops latest General Election 2020 poll

Sinn Fein are the most popular political party in the country, a new poll has claimed.

The party led by Mary Lou McDonald topped the list with a quarter of voters saying they'll vote Sinn Fein.

Fianna Fail are the second most popular party on 23%, while Fine Gael are on 20%.

Details of the Irish Times/Ipsos MRBI poll were released on Monday night, ahead of Saturday's General Election.

The findings were gathered last Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Around 1,200 people across 120 locations took part in the poll.

One in five surveyed said they will vote for independents and other candidates, 8% chose the Green Party and just 4% picked a Labour candidate.

This is the third poll in a row that has Sinn Féin ahead of Fine Gael - and this one shows them leading by the largest margin, 5%.

The Red C poll for the Sunday Business Post put Sinn Féin and Fianna Fáil joint top at 24% each, while Sinn Féin were second ahead of Fine Gael in a Times Ireland Edition poll on Saturday.

The stunning rise of Sinn Féin and plummeting of Sinn Féin support has set up the RTE Prime Time debate as a political deathmatch.

Fianna Fail, Labour and the Greens are the most popular coalition on 17%, Fianna Fail and Sinn Fein are on 15%, while Fianna Fail and Fine Gael are on 14%. However, 23% would choose none of the options available on the poll.

Despite topping the overall support poll, 36% of respondents said they would not like to see Sinn Fein in Government.

That figure is even higher than the 32% of people who not like to see Fine Gael back in power. An estimated 23% said they would not like to see Fianna Fail in Government.

The results come five hours after RTE made a last-minute u-turn and invited Sinn Fein leader Mary Lou McDonald to its leaders' debate.

The broadcaster initially snubbed the Dublin TD and stated that only Fine Gael's Leo Varadkar and Fianna Fail's Micheal Martin would participate in the programme.

However, bosses decided to ask Ms McDonald to join following a meeting of the station's General Election steering committee at 11am on Monday.

Less than two hours after the announcement, Ms McDonald broke her silence to accept the invitation.

She wrote on Twitter: "Pleased to accept invitation to tomorrow night's leaders' debate on RTE."

The Prime Time debate will be held on RTE One on Tuesday night. The leaders will fight it out for votes ahead of the General Election, for which polling day is on Saturday, February 8.
