Huge blaze in Manchester commercial building - this is the scene in Miles Platting this morning

Firefighters are continuing to battle a blaze in Miles Platting this morning.

The huge fire broke out at a commercial building on Oldham Road at around 10.40pm last night (Wednesday).

A huge plume of smoke could be seen from miles around as the blaze ripped through the building into the early hours.

Residents were told to keep their windows and doors shut as eight fire engines and specialist appliances, including a ‘Stinger’, were used to bring the fire under control.

Station manager Steven Forster, who is in charge at the incident, said fire crews have 'worked exceptionally hard' in warm conditions through the night to bring the blaze under control.

"This has been a challenging incident, with crews needing to gain access to different areas on the site and working under the very warm conditions we’ve experienced lately, and I want to praise the determination and professionalism they’ve shown", he added.

“The smoke plume from the fire has now reduced considerably, and we will remain at the scene this morning to damp down the remaining pockets of fire.

“Some road closures are still in place.

"I’d like to thank local residents and business owners for their patience and cooperation, and ask that people please continue to avoid the area while we are in attendance.”

A cordon remains in place at the scene with the road shut off between Hulme Hall Lane and Ten Acers Lane.

This is causing slow traffic in the area, according to traffic alert service Inrix.

Some bus diversions - including on First bus services 83, 84, 181 and 182 - are in place.

Northern Rail has warned of disruption on all train routes coming in and out of Manchester due to the fire.

A spokesperson for the rail company said last night: "Many of our trains are displaced as a result of the line closure and may not be in the correct place to operate services in the morning.

"Disruption is possible on all routes in and around Manchester, but we'll be working through the night to provide the best service possible."

"Eight fire engines and other specialist appliances are currently at the scene.

"Firefighters are working hard in very warm conditions to tackle the blaze in sectors using jets, an aerial platform and a ground monitor, and to prevent spread to adjacent buildings.

"Road closures are in place. Local residents are advised to keep their windows and doors closed and should avoid the area while firefighters carry out their work."
