A huge fire has broken out at an Edinburgh chippy, prompting firefighters to evacuate people from flats above. Emergency services were called to Franco's Fish and Chip Shop on Summerhall Place in the capital shortly after 11.30am.
A total of nine appliances have been dispatched to the scene, in the Newington area, including two specialist appliances. It is unclear how the fire began and if anyone has been injured.
Dramatic images shared on social media showed enormous flames spewing from the doorway of the eatery, with black smoke billowing into the sky. The damage has reportedly spread to adjoining units, causing extended damage.

Mark Ludmon, who shared pictures on Twitter, wrote: "Horrifying-looking fire at Franco’s Fish & Chips in Summerhall Place next to Drouthy Neebors. I hope everyone got out safely. The fire service are on their way!"
An eyewitness, a 39-year-old dad of two, told Edinburgh Live: "There was smoke everywhere across the whole area. It looked like people were being led to safety from the flat above. It's really near to the kids playground at the Meadows. It was really scary for them all to see it unfold."

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "We were alerted at 11.34am on Monday, 8 August to reports of a fire affecting commercial premises and adjoining property on Summerhall Place, Edinburgh. We have sent nine appliances, including two specialised appliances, to the scene.
"Crews remain in attendance where they work to contain the fire and make the scene safe. Three casualties have been handed into the care of paramedics.”
A Police Scotland spokesperson confirmed officers were in attendance to assist firefighters with directing traffic away from the area.
