Huge beach clean up planned for Portobello beach this weekend

A huge clean up of Portobello beach will go ahead on Saturday as locals take keeping the site clean into their own hands.

The litter collection will run from 10am-12pm on July 25 in an attempt to clear some of the junk that has made its way to Edinburgh's biggest beach.

Local residents have been invited to take part in the event, after one person was reported to have found 200 pieces of plastic on the beach in just half an hour.

Organisers have stated that social distancing will be observed at the clean up, with attendees asked to bring their own gloves and hand sanitiser.

The group will meet at Tumbles on the beach front before making their way onto the sand to begin the clean up.

Portobello beach has become a popular spot during lockdown, with thousands of Edinburgh residents flocking to the site over the last few months.

In May, hundreds of people were spotted at the beach on one of the hottest days of the year, despite coronavirus lockdown rules still being in place at the time.

The beach has also been a popular spot for littering in recent years, with plastic containers, drinks bottles and other items of rubbish frequently left behind by visitors.

Last year, campaigners had called for more bins and recycling points to be placed along the beach to encourage the public to safely dispose of their litter and protect the environment.
