'Huge bang' shook house as dramatic fire consumed bus in residential street

Firefighters were called to a residential street after a bus burst into flames just yards from people’s homes.

The incident happened in the town of Abercarn in Caerphilly county on Tuesday morning.

The bus was travelling along Bryn Road in the town shortly before 11.35am when it’s understood that a fire began near one of its wheels.

Within minutes, the whole bus was fully ablaze, with images captured at the scene showing the scale of the fire.

Local resident Lewis Davies was sat on his sofa on Tuesday morning when he heard a “huge bang”.

“The noise shook the whole house so I ran upstairs to see if anything had happened, I thought maybe something had fallen,” said Mr Davies.

“Then I looked outside and saw flames rising from a bus outside.

“From what I can gather the bus had been driving up the hill towards the bus stop at the end of the road when the driver got out and noticed a fire underneath or near one of the wheels.

“The tyre then exploded and the wheel was on fire. Within a few minutes it was all up in flames. A neighbour called the fire service and they were there very quickly.”

South Wales Fire and Rescue Service said firefighters were able to extinguish the fire in less than an hour.

A spokeswoman for the service said: “We were called to a vehicle fire in Abercarn at 11.35am on Tuesday.

“We sent a crew from Risca to the scene and they were able to extinguish the fire using a hosereel jet.

"The fire only involved one vehicle and our crew left the scene at around 12.30pm.”

The spokeswoman added that nobody was injured as a result of the incident.
