Huge bang 'shakes houses' in north Liverpool after reports of explosion

A huge explosion was heard throughout north Liverpool in the middle of the night after police believe an industrial firework was let off.

The massive bang happened in Croxteth, but people living in Norris Green , Walton , Fazakerley , Huyton , Knowsley Village , Stockbridge Village , Prescot all heard it.

It was even heard over the River Mersey in Birkenhead.

This morning, police said that Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service had sent a crew out to the scene on Parkstile Lane in Croxteth , at 1.12am.

When they arrived, no evidence of an explosion was found.

But police are confident it was an industrial-strength firework.

It is thought the firework was set off in a field.

On Facebook, Antonia Boyham said: "I'm in Norris Green and heard it, but haven't heard any sirens, was so loud me and hubby flew out the bed, but none of my neighbours seem to have heard it."

Sophie Gough said: "Didn't sound like a firework, it's scary isn't it, especially with all the shootings happening lately.

"It's just me and my little boy in the house as well so I get really frightened."

Amber McKenna said: "I don't know what it was, but it shook the whole house and woke everyone up."

Some people speculated it was low-flying fighter jets, with one local in Wirral saying: "I’m in Birkenhead and everyone heard it over here, apparently two jets it was something to do with them, it was on a news channel."

Police also said the bang happened near to Elwick Drive in Croxteth, but no flames or smoke were found by investigating emergency services.
