Huge bang heard across Salford and city centre earlier today - this is what caused it

A loud bang was heard across Salford and parts of Manchester city centre this morning.

Dozens of people reported hearing a loud bang just before midday today at around 11.54am.

Metal recycling firm Bennett Bros confirmed the noise came from their scrap yard.

Staff at the firm, in Cornbrook Road, Stretford, said a lorry had reversed over a piece of scrap metal and burst its tyre.

A spokesman for the company said: “A lorry tyre burst in the yard. It backed over a piece of scrap and burst and made a loud noise.”

Salford residents quickly took to social media in a bid to find the cause of the mysterious bang.

Twitter user @Tia_Kirkland said: “Anyone hear the huge explosion type sound in Salford?!”

@eddie_i_am said: “#Salford did anyone else just hear a loud bang? Regent Road area”

@Nickherring said: “Maaaaaaaaaaasive bang in Salford then. What on earth was that?!”
